Analysis of Vibration Stress in Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors Under Different Mounting Configurations
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors used in vehicle and industrial equipment often suffer from mechanical vibration. The vibration can cause bending stress at the capacitor leads and may finally lead to fracture. In this paper,a three-dimensional finite element model of a capacitor with printed circuit board assembly was built to study the influence of different mounting configurations. The vibration load was simplified as equivalent acceleration. A value of 10
g
was applied in the

,

and

directions. Two mounting types were considered, including vertical through-hole installation and horizontal installation. The cases with and without adhesive fixation were also compared. The simulation shows that both mounting types are sensitive to vibration direction, but the main stress direction is different. Without adhesive support, the horizontal type has higher stress level. Stress concentration mainly appears at the lead root and bending region. After applying adhesive, the maximum equivalent stress decreases greatly and the stress concentration becomes weaker. This research results suggest that mounting configuration changes the lever arm length and load transfer path, which directly affects vibration reliability.
