With the development of IP technology

many access technologies based on Ethernet are come forth

EPON is one of these. EPON

because of its integrated predominance

is deserved so much honors and viewed by many as an attractive solution to the “First Mile” bottleneck. But with the standardization of EPON

a few questions emerge. Since EPON is based on Ethernet

it faces with a few difficulties when it comes to transmit real-time data. At the same time

EPON shares transmitted media and broadcast all downstream data

undoubtedly it confronts with secure problems. This paper presents new challenges faced with EPON: supporting multi-service and security research

and puts forward some novel proposals to solve these two issues.
