Co-pyrolysis of Rice Straw and PVC for the Preparation of Carbon Materials and Their Electrochemical Performance
To achieve the efficient and synergistic resource utilization of biomass and waste plastics, a co-pyrolysis method of rice straw (RS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was employed to prepare high-performance capacitor carbon materials (PR). This study investigated the reaction pathways of the co-pyrolysis process and the structure-performance relationship of PR. A Joule heating device was used for rapid co-pyrolysis experiments, where the pyrolysis temperature (
t
=500, 600, 700, 800 ℃) and the material ratio (
m
(PVC)∶
m
(RS)=3∶1, 2∶1, 1∶1, 1∶2, 1∶3) were adjusted to produce a series of porous PRs. The micro-morphology, graphitization degree, and functional group characteristics of PR were characterized using thermogravimetry-derivative thermogravimetry (TG-DTG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The electrochemical double-layer capacitance storage performance and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance were tested using a three-electrode system. The results indicated a significant positive synergistic effect in the RS and PVC co-pyrolysis system, where RS effectively lowered the initial decomposition temperature of PVC and enhanced the pyrolysis rate. As the temperature increased, t
he graphitization degree and defect density (

G
) of PR increased; however, when
t
>
700 ℃, the pore structure of PR collapsed, hindering ion transport in the electrolyte. When
t
=600 ℃ and
m
(PVC)∶
m
(RS)=1∶3, the pyrolyzed PR exhibited a hierarchical porous structure and suitable defect structure (

G
≈2.0), demonstrating optimal electrochemical performance, with the electrochemically active surface area corresponding to the double-layer capacitance (
C

) reaching its maximum value (1.318 5 μF/cm²) and exhibiting the lowest hydrogen evolution overpotential. The incorporation of RS not only constructed a developed ion transport channel but also mitigated the adverse effects arising from the PVC pyrolysis process through the synergistic effect, providing a reference for the development of low-cost, high-performance carbon-based energy storage materials.
